How to Make Heels Quieter (8 Easy Tips)

How to Make Heels Quieter (8 Easy Tips)

Ladies love to wear heels but they are somehow noisy sometimes. Do you want to know how to make heels quieter?

There are a lot of ways that you can do this. Use high heels cap, Antislip sole pads, Duct or Coffer tape, foot foam or sandpaper to make heels quieter.

The best way is by using heel caps silencers, but there are also gel cushions and rubber soles. These things will help keep the noise down while still letting you wear your favorite shoes. More on this latter.

But before you apply these tips, you should first get your gait right.

How to Walk more Quietly in Heels?

If you want to walk more quietly in heels, it’s important that the shoe is tightened. If your heel slips and is not fastened well enough then there will be a dragging sound as the shoes scrape against the floor surface. Also, make sure that you don’t wear oversized shoes.

Apart from that, you should not lift your foot too high. And use less force when you are lowering your feet. Overall, just soften your gait if you can. (take measured steps)

However, this won’t make your heels significantly quiet. For this, you would either have to invest in a quiet heel pair or have to apply DIY hacks to quiet the heels you already have.

You can also apply these hacks to cowboy boots and flat shoes.

8 Tips on How To Make Your Heels Quieter:

Gel Cushion works fine for oversized heals making a loud noise

One easy way to make your heels quieter is by using a gel cushion. Gels are inserts that can be placed inside of shoes, and they come in a range of colors and materials including leather or neoprene.

Gel cushions work as heel silencers because the softer material absorbs more sound than hard soles will. They also help with shock absorption, which reduces how much noise you might hear from walking on different surfaces such as wood floors or stone paths outside your office building.

They also have other advantages:

  1. They reduce the risk of forwarding slipping
  2. You will make use of oversized heals
  3. You can switch them between different shoes

The best part is you don’t have to make any significant change to the outside of the shoes.

A drawback of this method is that they are not as durable and may wear out faster, so if you expect to walk a lot in your heels, be ready to fork out extra dollars.

Use high heels cap to quiet the heels

High heels especially Stiletto heels make a lot of noise when you walk on a wooden/tiled floor.

The best way to make your heels quieter is by using heel caps. The cap will limit the sound that comes from bouncing off of the floor surfaces and also prevent damage to both your shoes and floors.

These silicone/rubber caps slip over pointy tips of high heels that are too noisy or make an inordinate amount of noise when they hit the ground.

You can buy them online or at any shoe store near you for a reasonable price. They come in all colors, shapes, and sizes. Attaching them to the heels tips is a breeze,

We recommend that you should use transparent caps as they would not affect the aesthetic appeal of the heels.

Another benefit of heel caps is the stability and sturdiness that contribute to the heels. It prevents the heels from slipping (especially common in heels with metallic tips) and makes it convenient to walk on the grass. Also, it protects the heel tips from damage that may result in posture problems.

Using the heels caps might not completely silence the heels, but it will significantly reduce the noise. For better results, apply these hacks in combination with other hacks in this list.

Use Antislip sole pads (Rubber) to quiet your heels

Once you have fixed the heel tips, you should pay attention to the front of the sole. The tips make the clicky sound and the sole makes the tapping sound when you land your feet on the ground.

The friction from the ground can create a lot of high-pitched squeaks, especially when two smooth surfaces rub against each other, so it is worth fitting some rubber soles to stop this.

Rubber soles are an excellent shock and impact absorbent. For heel soles, we recommend that you use pads that are thick and textured. Just like heel caps, they add to the stability of your posture and gait.

Using silicone rubbers on the front of the sole will also prevent slipping if used correctly. Most rubber pads are self-adhesive. All you have to do is to peel the backing off and stick them on, then put your shoes back on. However, to fit them securely, we would recommend you hire an expert cobbler to install them.

Duct or Coffer tape Can quiet the heels

The simplest way to make your heels quieter is by using duct or coffer tape. This one is a DIY hack.

Apply the tape around the heel of your shoe, and then peel it back carefully after you have finished walking on hard surfaces such as tile or concrete floors.

The sound from your shoes will be greatly reduced with this method.

If you have both, you should prefer the coffer tape over the duct tape. The former is easy to remove and doesn’t damage the surface. Moreover,

Before you install the tape, clean off the dust at the bottom of your heels as it will improve adhesiveness of the tape. Cut the tape into the fitting size and paste it at the top of the soles. Make several layers to increase the density of the tape.

The tape acts in the same way as the anti-slip rubber pads we discussed above. It absorbs the impact thus effectivity deadheading the squeaky sound made from the sole rubbing against the smooth floor.

Use foot foam to quiet the heels

Foot foam serves the same purpose as the gel cushion, but is cheaper and easier to install.

You can buy it from most shoe stores. Stick this inside the heel of your shoes so that it crashes down around them when you walk, which will muffle any noise. They also provide additional cushioning against discomfort while wearing heeled footwear for extended periods of time.

If you have really expensive heels that don’t allow room for an insert like these, there are companies that sell rubber soles made specifically to fit into high-heel shoes.

Use sandpaper to change the texture of the heel

The texture of the rubber sole heels can be the culprit behind the excessive noise.

If you want to make your heels quieter, try sanding the rubber heel with some fine-grit sandpaper.

This changes the texture of the surface which will in turn reduce noise and debris that can get caught on it when walking.

Walk confidently

if you have just started wearing heels, it will take time to get used to them. Meanwhile, you might make a lot of noise.  It is not a problem, just walk confidently.

Remember the more you practice walking in high heel shoes, the better it will get.

As for me, I had been wearing heels since my teens but still, find that sometimes when I wear new and higher heel shoes like pumps or stilettos they are too much to handle and make a lot of noise.

You should keep the following key points in mind.

  1. Take small steps
  2. Avoid hard floor
  3. Invest in fitting heels
  4. Keep an upright posture

Buy quiet high heels

If you don’t want to apply any of the above-mentioned hacks to silence the noisy heels, we recommend you should invest in quiet heels.

The best quiet heels are fit with rubber padding on the sole. However, comfort should be your top priority.

Final Words on how to make heels quieter:

Your high heels may be too noisy and disturbing for other people, and luckily you can make it quiet.  Use heel caps, rubber soles, or gel cushions. If you work in a quiet office then do not wear high heels at all.

You can also use rubber sole pads to make the noise of your heel less loud and disturbing for others. Or you can fit metal studs on the bottom of your shoes if they are too slippery. Metal studs will give more traction than just using any other material like wood, plastic, etcetera.

We have discussed all the abovementioned hacks and more in this post. However, if you have tried anything else and it worked for you, please share it with us in the comment section.
