5 Tips on How to Quiet Doorknob Cheaply

Door knobs are loud: they squeak, they slam and they echo through the house with each twist of the knob. A quiet doorknob would be a blessing for parents who have kids sleeping or family members sleeping next door. You must be wondering, how to quiet doorknob cheaply.

Follow these hacks;

  • Lubricate The Latch
  • Disassemble The Doorknob, Clean And Lubricate It
  • Adjust the Metal Plate
  • Use Rubber or Foam Tape Around The Door Frame
  • Door Silencer Might Do The Trick

What if I tell you that would take less than $25 and you won’t necessarily have to replace the door latch.

Quiet Doorknob By Following These Hacks

I have had a squeaky door latch in my home, and believe me, whenever someone opened or close the door, I couldn’t resist outbursts of anger and frustration. The best I can hope is that your situation isn’t as bad as mine.

If you take my case, I couldn’t sleep, work, or enjoy quiet time alone, and as I have kids around, the situation couldn’t be worse.

I am writing this post to help out those who are suffering through the same.

Lubricate The Latch

I had the exact same problem, and it was driving me crazy!

Here’s what I tried:

Dry the metals that are clanking against each other and making noise. Apply a lubricant over it, I would recommend WD40. It will fix the problem.

You can Spray WD40 around the top of the doorknob near where it meets with the frame to help quiet things down and to moisten any rubber parts if they’re stuck.

You can deal with the rusty doorknob in the same way.

To keep things quiet for a long time, you will have to regularly maintain the doorknob.

Disassemble The Doorknob, Clean And Lubricate It

If lubricating the doorknob doesn’t work, you can disassemble it for detailed inspection.

Most doorknobs are screwed into the door. A simple screwdriver can do the job. Just unscrew the knob, and disassemble it. Now, inspect all parts for dust particles and rust.

Clean every piece with alcohol and then apply lubricant to it.

While reassembling the doorknob, make sure you fix the loose parts as they might be the culprits. Turn the doorknob and test for squeakiness, hopefully, it would be quieter than before.

Adjust the Metal Plate

Sometimes the doorknob itself isn’t the problem.

The metal plate on a door can cause noise when it’s improperly placed causing unwanted noise when you apply force while closing or opening the door.

It goes without saying, that you follow the practice of turning the door handle, or doorknob before closing the door to prevent slamming noise.

Use Rubber or Foam Tape Around The Door Frame

This hack also has nothing to do with the doorknob.

The door slamming against the door frame produces more noise than the squeaky doorknob, so it needs to be fixed separately.

You can add foam or rubber tape around the frame. This will significantly reduce the impact of noise.

The foam or tape creates the necessary resistance that absorbs the impact of the door thus preventing noise.

Door Silencer Might Do The Trick

You can use a door silencer, also known as a soft close closer to reduce the noise when opening and closing doors.

The soft close closer is easy to install and will not require any professional.

Sometimes there is a gap between the latch bolt and metal plate, so whenever someone closes a door, it triggers the rattling of all doors in the house. You can fix the metal plate on which the latch strike or can buy a door jammer to hold the door in a fixed place.

Final Thoughts On How To Quiet Door Knob

Making your doorknob quiet is quite easy if you know the source of the noise. It won’t take a professional to quiet the doorknob as you can do it yourself without replacing or buying another doorknob.

Keep in mind that, all the hacks we discussed above to silence the doorknob will not make it 100% quiet. You can simply seal the door frame using foam tape, but that would cause more harm than good as you might not be able to close the door properly.
